Product Demonstrations-Video and Audio Lessons

Students in Marketing I were video taped with a class camera conducting product demonstrations as a component of their Sales Unit. Student will watch and listen to their own presentations posted on the class blog then complete a self-evaluation using a rubric that measures voice, tone, body gestures, word usage, calrity etc. This will better prepare them for their culminating event with is a sales presentation.

Kristin Drinen, video consumption and creation, c12

Consumption:
In PFM we show a video to help students understand the structure and functions of the Federal Reserve. Here's a link: http://www.stlouisfed.org/education_resources/inplainenglishvideo.cfm

Creation:
Having some technical difficulties with this one. My fabulous idea is becoming a little harder to execute than expected. In Intro to Business one of our units is social responsibility. We do a case study on Ben & Jerry's, pioneers for linking business with social values. The company creates numerous flavors that promote and support social initiatives/charities. Students pick a charity to support and then make an ice cream flavor on their website's flavor generator. I then have them present their new flavor and the social mission behind it. I was planning on having them present via a commercial made with PhotoStory. So far issues I have had: 1. getting PhotoStory downloaded on my desktop classroom computers that are administrator locked. 2. using their phones to record audio and then email it, save to H:drive and then import into PhotoStory - PhotoStory does not support the audio file format used on the phones. 3. borrowed the super cool pilot headphones for audio recording but so far no luck - tried plugging into two different places on the computer as well as alternating both input connections but still can't hear my audio play back. Needless to say, I loved the idea but don't have a whole lot more time to spend working on logistics right now; the class is supposed to be starting the project on Friday. May have to be something for next semester, technology permitting.

DECA animoto video

I am not completely done with it but here is the beginning.

Video used for review in Marketing

I used the following YouTube video to reinforce topics learning in the sales section of features and benefits. I inserted the link into my Powerpoint and brought it up after I explained the features and benefits project before they began to work on it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiSpUtjEKrM&feature=fvwrel The JT Show has lots of sales videos that fit with my curriculum. One problem is that sometimes he doesn't use the same vocabulary as my curriculum does.

Hausner Video Project

The students' video project went right along with their audio project. They had already recorded their voices and taken pictures for their virtual tour of the school that is on the blog,so I had some of them take video instead of pictures. The video recordings were added to their blog along with pictures and audio recordings. Click here to check out the blog. Once you get to the blog, the links to their individual schools are on the right.

Video in the classroom

Student Creation-Students from Service Group Komfort 4 Kids needed to create a video to launch the Service Project's mission.  They made it in Movie Maker.  I have also had students create video for an Economic concept.  They are a lot of fun to watch.

Drinen, c12, Davitt, audio

In our Civil Law unit in Business Law students will practice their advocacy skills by arguing for either the plaintiff or the defendant in a specific scenario provided. Students will prepare a 1 minute argument that they will present to the class. The argument must detail why their side should prevail. To prepare, they will record themselves using their own devices and then playback their argument to critique and improve for the final argument that will be live in front of the class. Students will need to document what they liked about their argument, what needs work, and how they plan to improve for the final argument in front of the class.

Blackwood C12 Audio Davitt

This is the sounds of what the planer in the shop sounds like when it is started. The reason for doing this is so students understand that they need to wait for the machine to come up to full speed before putting the wood into the planer. I will use this when we do safety lessons at the beginning of the year.  I think that a video will be much better, then I can show what to do also. The benfit would be that I don't have 28 kids around one machine.http://audioboo.fm/boos/660270-planer-sounds A better mic would be great. It would be great to post safety videos to my facebook page so the kids could go back and review.

Entrepreneur archives

I didn't have the google voice set up in time to do it this year, but am planning on it for next fall. All of my students interview entrepreneurs as a class assingment. I will now have students create a recording of the interview using Google Voice and then I will keep an archive of all the interviews on my blog for students to use based on what type of business they are interested in using. Here are the questions they ask the entrepreneurs: Ask the Entrepreneur Student name: Name of Entrepreneur: Name of Business: Interview a local entrepreneur, ask the following questions: 1. How old were you when you began working at your first job? 2. When you were younger and just beginning to work, did you enjoy working? Why or why not? 3. Did you have ideas about how things could be done better at your first few jobs? Did you suggest changes to your boss? Where your ideas ever used? 4. When did you first get the idea of being your own boss or starting your own business? 5. Do you think you could run any business successfully? Why or why not? 6. How much time do you spend a week working? Would you like to work more or less? Explain. 7. How important do you think a high school education is to being a successful entrepreneur? A college education? 8. Of all your skills and abilities, which contributes most to your success as a business owner? Why? 9. What mistakes or weaknesses do you think most often lead to failure for entrepreneurs? 10. What advice would you give to someone who was considering starting their own business someday?

Google Voice in the German classroom

I have set up a Google voice account and had my 8th graders call in and describe their clothing to me in German.  I think it worked very well with 2 exceptions:
1.  I gave the kids the wrong number the first time (!), so it didn't work (obviously!).

2.  There are still about 20% of the kids who didn't call in at all and have a 0 on the assignment.  I think this number will decrease as I give more of these assignments.

Audio Project Hausner

The students are creating virtual tours of Sperreng and Truman. They are each responsible for a different area of the school and are recording themselves using Google Voice. The students are putting a lot of effort into this because they want to be able to record themselves and then go take pictures of their area. The biggest challenge so far has been getting them to slow down and speak clearly into the phone. This is a sample of a student giving an introduction to Sperreng.

Audio Project Idea Kimker

I am going to use Google Voice for my audio project.  I will have the students in one class call me to report on their satisfaction with their lab groups.  They can tell me what problems they are having and whether or not they would like to have changes made regarding the composition of their groups.  I think this will be a great way for students to give me information that they would not want to share in front of other students.

Audio Project Judy Girard

Students will record themselves presenting their "How to" project for the Product Demonstration unit of the Sales Manual.  They will then reflect on how they did, with the customer perception in mind.

Audio Project Idea Shoults

My Graphic Design students do a project with ECE. They pair up with ECE students and create a children's book for the student. To start off they interview the students about their favorite superheroes, books, movies, color, etc. to get to know them. Last year they interviewed them and wrote down their discussions. This year they are going to voice record their interviews with the students so they don't have to have any breaks in conversation to write down notes. I got this idea from a student in Pilot who interviewed me for a quote and she just used her cell phone to record. It was great because there were no awkward silences while she wrote anything down, we just kept talking like normal conversation. I will have students that have access to a cell phone or recorder use that. The students who do not, can use pen and paper. I may experiment with some online options since they will be using computers too.

Stortzum-DECA experience with student devices

New public portal-I am trying to post a weekly list of assignments into my classroom Facebook page. The problem is, with 5 preps, I feel like it takes forever to put this up. I am working on doing it once a week. I am also experimenting with creating a calendar in Google, uploading it to my blog and then putting a link in facebook to the blog. https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Stortzum-LHS/242041882518698 (My classroom page) Student devices-I had my students use the GPS feature in NYC last week to determine our location relative to our hotel. This was a great way for students to problem solve on their own when out on free time instead of calling me if they needed directions or were trying to get back to the hotel. I felt it gave them a feeling of more independence instead of making me their first call. I would like to try using the student devices more in class, just need to find the time to figure out a way to incorporate it into a current lesson or create a new one.

Judy Girard-audio device

initially I wll let the Marketing I students record their three different types of sales greeting and give feedback to themselves and me as to how they did.
In May, my Careers kids can do peer interviewing and self-evaluate how they did in the interview.

Hausner audio project

For my audio project I am going to assign each student one place around the school and have them take a picture of that place.  Then, they need to write out a description of what they would say about that place during a tour.  Once their script has been edited by another student and read over by the teacher, they will call our class google voice number and record their description.  Then the picture and the description will both be uploaded onto our class blog as a virtual tour of the school.

The purpose of this project is to improve their writing and speaking skills.  I also hope to encourage them to help new students with their tour.
