Regarding my public portal, I have been working on using Facebook and Tumblr to keep my students updated with assignments coming up as well as links with more information or current news posts. I use Tumblr to post links to websites that may not necessarily be what we are discussing in class or a current assignment, but it has relevant news that relates to the class. I don't want to bombard their Facebook with too much information so Tumblr is a great place to post extra information or extra ideas for review.
