I used my facebook page for information about Key Club activities in addition to class assignments.  I also changed the picture next to the messages.  I also added a powerpoint to facebook. http://www.facebook.com/?sfrm=1#!/pages/Kimker-FACS/238100476249835
In class, I had students use their phones to give them reminders to turn in a paper their parents were to sign.
I'm still waiting for some of the slips with parents' signatures so I'm not sure how well that worked, but it couldn't have hurt.  Most of my students do not use planners so if they will use an electronic device at least they probably won't lose it.
